Transition to=20 the Revised Common Lectionary at Advent 2007

The=20 75th General Convention in June, 2006 directed that the Revised = Common=20 Lectionary replace the Book of Common Prayer lectionary "effective = the=20 First Sunday of Advent 2007; with the provision for continued use = of the=20 previous Lectionary for purposes of orderly transition, with the=20 permission of the ecclesiastical authority, until the First Sunday = of=20 Advent 2010 (A077)." (Episcopal= =20 News Service)

To = accommodate=20 this change, in 2005 we began to make available the Revised Common = Lectionary readings for Sundays and Holy Days, in addition to the=20 traditional (Book of Common Prayer) lections.

Many churches = have=20 already begun using the Revised Common Lectionary readings. Many = others=20 will make the change at Advent, 2007. During the three year = transitional=20 period authorized by the General Convention in which you may = continue to=20 use the Book of Common Prayer lectionary with the approval of your = bishop,=20 we will continue to make both choices accessible on this site. =

You=20 may wish to visit the site of the Office=20 of Liturgy and Music of the Episcopal Church to learn = more.

A=20 few words of explanation and caution: The General Convention of = 2000 which=20 authorized the trial use of the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) = actually=20 modified the RCL slightly to conform to Episcopal worship needs. = We honor=20 those modifications, and will be attentive to any future = developments in=20 usage. It is not currently clear whether these modifications will = persist=20 with official adoption.

On Sundays and Holy Days on the = calendar,=20 choosing "BCP" will bring up the lections prescribed by the Book = of Common=20 Prayer lectionary. Choosing "RCL" will call up the Revised Common=20 Lectionary readings.

When there is no choice available, = either the=20 lections are identical, or the RCL offers no option. The weekday = feasts=20 and fasts are a matter of Episcopal usage and are not supported by = the=20 RCL.

Adding the RCL lections has been an ongoing project = for many=20 months. Thank you for your patience during this=20 transition.

The lessons appointed for the following = special=20 services are now available:

Marria= ges
Burials<= /A>
Dedica= tion of a=20 Church

This site was created to support all those who need access to the = lesson=20 texts of the Episcopal (ECUSA) Eucharistic Lectionary.

The Sunday Lectionary is a three year cyclical lectionary. We are = currently=20 in Year A. The year which will begin with Advent in 2008 will be Year B. = The=20 year which ended at Advent 2007 was Year C.

The Bible translation used is The New Revised Standard Version, = copyright=20 1989 by the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of = the=20 Churches of Christ in the USA, and used by permission.

The collects and the Psalms are from the Book of Common Prayer. The = collects=20 use the contemporary wording.

The liturgical color appropriate for the day is indicated, when the = color is=20 green, red or purple, by the color of the numeral against a light grey=20 background. When the liturgical color is white, the numeral is black = against a=20 white background.

I am always interested in ways to make this site more useful to you. = Your feedback is appreciated. And, please, = let me=20 know as soon as possible if you catch an error in this = material.

The Comprehensive Index of Texts from the Book of Common = Prayer=20 lectionary has been subdivided to speed access to the Lectionary texts. = Year = A &=20 Year B are indexed on one page, while Year = C, The=20 Holy Days, and Special Services are on another. Lesse= r Feasts=20 and Fasts occupies a third page. You may easily move between the = pages. The=20 Revised Common Lectionary index is under development.

Other Helpful Sites

A wonderful lectionary-based collection of commentaries, exegesis, = articles,=20 art and music suggestions can be found at Textweek.

I am often asked where one can find the Daily Lectionary (a two year = cycle)=20 online.

The Book of = Common=20 Prayer, in both the current and the historical versions, can be = found=20 online.

Bible study groups that follow the lectionary are a good way to build = community as well as faith. If you are looking for study guides, you = might look=20 at the lectionary study material offered by Paraklete Press.

Looking for more information about the saints? James Kiefer's=20 hagiographs are a good starting point.

Want to read the lessons in other translations? Crosswalk.com offers access to = the King=20 James, New King James, Revised Standard, New American Standard, New=20 International and several other versions.

Trying to find out when a particular lesson is going to be used? When = Will It Be=20 Read? is a wonderful reverse lectionary.
